Our Mission

The Alexander and Mabel Bell Legacy Foundation is a 501(c)(3), charitable and educational nonprofit, dedicated to preserving, protecting and advancing the Bells’ legacy and spirit of innovation. It is not a family foundation but an organization with clear mission and objectives in the public interest.

  • Preserve and advance the Bells’ heritage, image, artifacts and story.
  • Educate the public about the Bells’ contributions and achievements.
  • Reclaim and protect the Bells’ historical and cultural objects.
  • Monitor and vet usage of the Bells’ name, likeness and materials and arrange licenses for usage.
  • Provide support through grants funded by licensing fees and donations for charitable and educational endeavors related to the Bells’ scientific and humanitarian interests and spirit of innovation.

The Foundation was incorporated in February of 2014 as a non-stock corporation under the general laws of the State of Maryland.

Tax-exempt Status

The Foundation has federal tax-exempt status under the U.S. Internal Revenue Code of 1986, Section 501(c)(3).

Internal and External Oversight

The Directors who serve and oversee ALEXANDER & MABEL BELL LEGACY FOUNDATION help to develop and advance the interests of our donors in ways that go beyond just raising money. Good governance is more than just supporting the organization – it also means representing the community’s interests in what we do. Our Board of Directors has three fundamental legal obligations, or fiduciary duties, which apply to everything we do.

Duty of Care: The amount of care that an ordinarily prudent person would exercise in a like position and under similar circumstances. This describes the criteria our Directors must give to making decisions on behalf of THE ALEXANDER & MABEL BELL LEGACY FOUNDATION.

Duty of Loyalty: Keeping the interests of THE ALEXANDER & MABEL BELL LEGACY FOUNDATION in mind at all times when making decisions on behalf of the organization.

Duty of Obedience: Requires board members to be faithful to our mission; consistent with the mission statement, Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, and tax-exempt documentation.

Legally Incorporated: The BYLAWS and ARTICLES of INCORPORATION provide details on how our organization is structured and managed.

Tax Exempt: We are recognized by the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as tax-exempt organization. The IRS DETERMINATION LETTER confirms this information.

Volunteer Governance: Our BOARD of DIRECTORS provides internal oversight to the organization.

Privacy Respected: THE ALEXANDER & MABEL BELL LEGACY FOUNDATION subscribes to the Association of Fundraising Professionals DONOR BILL OF RIGHTS, to honor the privacy of our donors. We do not sell, share or trade donors’ personal information to any other entity. Donors are recognized in the organization’s annual report to the community.
